If you granted permissions or workflow actions to the document creator, and some of these users left the company, you can rely on the version creator, and create a new version for the documents that cause you issues.
The version creator of the first version of a document is the document creator, so for all the other documents, nothing would change.

One of our document creators recently resigned and was subsequently replaced. In our company, the person's name and surname determine the e-mail address, so the new person responsible for the role has a different e-mail address than the original creator. The new appointee needs to take over the responsibility of managing the documents created by the previous creator and for this to happen she needs to be the creator so that she can start new versions.
